1. First things first: breathe.

Whether you’re clutching your grades with a grin, feeling underwhelmed, or still processing the numbers on the page, remember: today is just one chapter in your story - not the whole book.

  • If you’re happy: Celebrate! You earned it.
  • If you’re disappointed: You still have options - clearing, resits, gap years, apprenticeships. Success isn’t only for those who sail through without detours.

2. Clearing: the fast lane to your next step

If you didn’t get the offers you wanted:

  • Log into UCAS Track to see your status.
  • Check the official Clearing listings (updated constantly).
  • Have your UCAS number and grades ready when you call universities.
  • Be open-minded; sometimes the “Plan B” uni ends up being your best fit.

3. Before you pack your bags

Starting university isn’t just about lectures and libraries. It’s also about learning to live independently (and surviving without your parents’ cooking).
Here’s your Pre-Uni Prep Checklist:

Life Admin:

  • Bank account: If you don’t have a student account yet, get one with a good overdraft and freebies.
  • Budgeting basics: Your student loan is not a lottery win - divide by term weeks to know your weekly budget.
  • Documents: Passport, ID, NI number, uni acceptance letter - keep them in a folder.

Accommodation & Living:

  • Pack light. You won’t need 15 mugs or 4 duvet sets.
  • Bring at least one “cosy” thing from home - photos, blanket, teddy bear (yes, no one will judge).
  • Learn 3 meals you can cook without setting off the fire alarm.

Health & Wellbeing:

  • Register with a GP near your uni.
  • Stock a small first-aid kit (painkillers, plasters, cold/flu meds).
  • Get into the habit of checking in with yourself - freshers’ week is exciting but can also be overwhelming.

4. Skills that will save you

  • Laundry decoding: Colours and whites do matter.
  • Basic cooking: Pasta is great, but vegetables are your friend.
  • Email etiquette: Universities still love formal emails. No “Hey prof, what’s up?”
  • Time management: Lectures, societies, social life - you’ll need to juggle.

5. Don’t just study - explore!

Uni life is also about experiences:

  • Join societies, even ones you know nothing about.
  • Attend fresher fairs and sign up for way too many mailing lists - you can quit later.
  • Make friends outside your course - you’ll appreciate different perspectives.

6. Final word

Your grades got you here, but who you become next is shaped by how you adapt, learn, and take opportunities. Today’s results are the ticket; the journey starts now.

So - celebrate, regroup if needed, and start thinking about the you who’ll be walking onto campus in a month’s time.
